debunking nra bullet points

the nra has a series of tropes that they've been trotting out for decades:

  1. this isn't the right time to talk about it
  2. gun laws don't work because criminals don't obey laws
  3. people who obtain guns legally don't commit crimes
  4. it's not a gun crisis, it's a mental health crisis
  5. women need gun for self-defense
  6. the uk banned guns and still have knife violence, so stop blaming guns
  7. restricting guns invites government tyranny
  8. guns don't kill people, people do. do you want to ban xxx next?
  9. what about chicago?
all of these are myths, or what i like to call total bullshit. for the facts on each bullet point, click here,

72-hour gun violence map

since weapons manufacturers own congress and a sizable portion of the supreme court, guns are likely to remaion the number one killer of americans until there aren't any americans left. that being the case, wouldn't it be nice to have a map that shows where all the shooting is taking place so you can avoid it? over, say, the past 72 hours?

the gun violence archive is a non-partisan group and website that provides exactly that. thank them, won't you?

a little good is better than none

when timothy mcveigh committed the oklahoma city bombing, we started asking everyone who bought lots of fertilizer if they actually had a farm. we have to present an i.d. when we buy cold medicine because no one wants a meth lab in their neighborhood. when one fellow wore tennies with a prize inside, we all started taking our shoes off at the airport, because only superman can fly without an airplane.

somewhere between 75% and 85% of us agree that universal background checks are a good thing. they won't solve everything, but they will solve some things, and solving some things is better than what we have now. anyway, what plan in the history of our species has ever solved everything? and when did it become okay to let horrible things happen because we didn't have a perfect plan?

it's not even hard to do something about it: just contact your mayor, governor, and members of congress. tell them that you will make it your goal in life to unseat them if they don't straighten this shit out. that's what we pay them for, right?

isn't it time we got our money's worth?

states with most guns have most gun deaths

roughly 32% of american households have guns. this is down significantly from 20 years ago, and follows a 3 decade drop in the u.s. crime rate. another interesting fact: the states with the highest gun ownership also have the highest death rates due to guns.

repeal 'stand your ground'

a study by texas a&m university found that states that enacted 'stand your ground' laws experienced a sharp increase in violent crime and homicides - exactly the opposite of what proponents said 'stand your ground' laws would do.

'stand your ground' laws have failed. it's time to repeal them. click here to make that happen.

you'll be surprised who supported gun control

ronald reagan. nixon. the founding fathers. all of the big cowboy towns in the wild west, and the nra. all of those folks supported gun control.

so why has the nra changed its tune? maybe because it used to receive most of its funding from members, but today it receives the bulk of its money from gun manufacturers. the same folks who are against making illegal gun trafficking a federal crime.

let's review that: we're not talking about a law to limit the number or kinds of guns that you can have, or how many rounds they can hold, or even whether or not you have to be sane to buy one. they are against making illegal gun trafficking a federal crime.

wtf?

you often hear gun advocates say that if we take guns away from 'honest citizens', the only people left with guns will be criminals. they're probably right, because gun manufacturers apparently want to ensure that criminals will always have access to their products, as long as it puts money in their pockets.

if you're a gun advocate, this article won't change your mind; belief is a powerful thing, and no amount of logic will overcome it. but maybe you'll at least think about it - your own thoughts with your own mind.
