more than 1,000 years before columbus sailed, greek scientist eratosthenes determined that the earth is round using nothing more than shadows, geometry, and a fellow he hired to pace out the distance between two cities. he even estimated the circumference of the earth as being about 40,000 kilometers. (he was, of course, right on both counts.)
